The Allure of Matter

A new exhibit at the Lost Angeles Country Museum of Art opened in June of this year (2019) and will run through January 5, 2020. The Allure of Matter: Material Art from China features works made from commonplace materials, to unconventional ones by contemporary Chinesee aqrtists. Some of the materials used inclue plastic, water, wood, hair and tobacco.

These works showcase what matter can be. Featured artists include Xu Bing, Ai Weiwei, Cai Guo-Qiang, Lin Tianmiao and Zhang Huan. Accompanying the exhibit is the first scholarly publication to examine Chinese materiality art. It is co-authored by the exhibition's curators Wu Hung, Harrie A. Vanderstappen and Orianna Cacchione.
